Column: Religion as pretext for transgression | Opinion

Brutal murder, cruelty, and misdeeds are not principles of traditional religions in the United States. Love, forgiveness and mercy are. Forty-three percent of us profess to be Christian (down from 70% 50 years ago). Twenty-one percent claim None (and increasing). Nearly two percent are Jewish. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Scientologists, Satanists, Zoroastrians, and other faiths provide the rest. See: us religious data — Bing.

Domestic terrorism, gun violence, racial intolerance, the Big Lie, and social injustice have grown to desperate proportions over the past decade. Many who foster these transgressions claim a religious basis for what they do.

Those terrorists arrested for assaulting our Capitol on January 6 were Christians. So too were those who are assaulting Asian Americans and harassing immigrants. Muslim Palestinians who are attacking Jewish Americans do their cause no good. It can curtail the U.S. efforts to aid in rebuilding of the Gaza Strip and an eventual Two-State Solution wherein they acquire a unified homeland. White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, Proud Boys, Nationalists, animal activists and other groups have done the same, each with religious overtones.

Assaults on birth control clinics are considered terrorist incidents. Crimes include murder, assault, arson, bombing, vandalism, kidnapping, stalking and harassment. Souls of the unborn are the chief argument. No love, forgiveness or mercy there for the victims!

Gun violence now occurs weekly. In 2020 nearly 44 thousand murders occurred with 610 mass shootings. This year’s record is even more grim. As recently as May 26, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputy Russell Davis stated that a disgruntled employee, Samuel Cassidy at the Valley Transportation Authority light rail repair facility in San Jose murdered nine people. The shooting occurred during a union meeting at 6:34 am local time. The 50-year-old male gunman committed suicide at the scene. The FBI found multiple weapons and ammunition inside the shooter’s home, which he had set ablaze.

Countries with the highest number of deaths by firearms are China, India, the United States and Indonesia. However, per hundred thousand inhabitants, the U.S. is by far the leader with 3.85/100k/yr. (China: .06/100k/yr and 27 times that of Denmark.) While a sizeable majority of us want stricter control of the Second Amendment, such as universal background checks, and withholding assault weapons, large-capacity magazines and armor-piercing rounds from civilians, Red states are passing laws making it easier for people to walk around armed for murder.

Racial intolerance has been exposed at many levels of our society. The death of George Floyd under the knee of Officer of Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis a year ago led to legislation now before Congress. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act will address the brutality found in some police departments. No religion espouses injustice as has been practiced by some police departments and must be remedied.

Religions do not allow prevarication. The Big Lie about the 2020 election results continues however. The Bidden/Harris ticket won more than 81 million popular votes and 306 electoral votes, many more than the opposing ticket. This has been certified by every attorney general and several recounts in several states.

Yet ludicrous election “audits” continue in Maricopa County, Arizona where amateurs look for bamboo threads, watermarks and other “evidence” of fictitious voting fraud. This nonsense has spread to Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and perhaps California. Pray tell, what is going on? Trumpublicans know fair and open elections cost them power which they do not concede gracefully. “Cheat if you must; just WIN!”

Social injustice has been detailed in the press and broadcast media. Minority groups have been mistreated, misrepresented and made miserable by groups who feel “superior” to them. Those who do these things and the other crimes outlined above have no remorse. Their faiths, though, know they have sinned.
