BUCKS COUNTY, PA — The head of the Bucks County Republican party signed an “alternate certificate” of invalid 2020 election results, according to documents acquired through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Patricia K. Poprik’s name appears alongside 19 others in a document that apparently designates the state’s 20 electoral votes to Donald Trump and Mike Pence, going against the popular vote in Pennsylvania.
Poprik chairs the Bucks County Republican Committee. Ted Christian, also a Bucks County local and a former senior advisor to Trump, signed the document, too — as did Republican candidates for Pennsylvania governor Lou Barletta and Charlie Gerow.
This certificate was then sent to the National Archives and Records Administration and to Gov. Tom Wolf. Of course, the government also received actual certificates from the state’s designated electors.
These “alternate certificates” were obtained by American Oversight, a self-described “nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog that uses public records requests backed by litigation to fight corruption, drive accountability, and defend democracy,” via FOIA request.
Similar documents were apparently also filed from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
However, the Pennsylvania signatories included a clause in their certificate saying they were certifying the designation of the votes “if as a result of a final non-appealable Court Order or other proceeding prescribed by law, we are ultimately recognized as being the duly elected and qualified electors for President and Vice President of the United States of America from the State of Pennsylvania.”
Because of this clause, a representative for Attorney General Josh Shapiro told Levittown Now that the “‘fake ballots'” from Pennsylvania are not considered a forgery at this point.
“Though their rhetoric and policy were intentionally misleading and purposefully damaging to our democracy, based on our initial review, our office does not believe this meets the legal standards for forgery,” their statement read.
The certificates from New Mexico included a similar conditional clause.
As Levittown Now reported at the time, Poprik joined with Bucks County Democratic Committee Chairperson John Cordisco in the days after the 2020 election to say local election officials were “fair, transparent, and accountable.”
Rachel Maddow of MSNBC featured the documents heavily in a Jan. 11 segment.
“This would … appear to be some kind of coordinated effort,” she said. “Or at least, someone gave Republicans in all these states the same template for creating these false records. … That doesn’t happen by accident.”
